White Sails Crowding
A History of the Royal Irish Yacht Club
by Henry Boylan, Peter Boylan, Jane Mahony
The Commodore and Flag Officers are delighted to invite you to the launch of the new edition of White Sails Crowding: A History of the Royal Irish Yacht Club on Thursday, 27th February, 2025 at 19.30 hrs.
This entertaining history expands on and brings up to date the first edition published in 1994. It charts the course of the Royal Irish from our early years during Victoria's reign, the building of our magnificent club-house and later development, during difficult years when financial and membership problems threatened the Club's very existence, and golden years when the most exciting events were near-collisions during races and regattas.
Our Club has survived wars, financial crises, harbour development and global pandemics. The Royal Irish was founded in the era of gaslight, before the first railway in Ireland was opened, when there was a viceroy in the Phoenix Park and convict ships in Kingstown Harbour. It thrives today in an era of satellite navigation and technological development unthinkable at the time of its founding.
White Sails Crowding celebrates the Royal Irish today as a vibrant and inclusive yacht club where we both cherish our long and distinguished history and traditions while looking forward to the future with ambition and confidence
The book will be available for purchase at €35 on the night and after from the Catering Office.
