RIYC SHOREBASED COURSES

Some of us have been sailing for some time, and perhaps have never really availed of any formal tuition in sailing related shore-based courses. For those who are interested in kick starting the 2022 sailing season early this year, we are pleased to announce some shore-based sailing related training courses which will be offered in the Club at a discounted rate to Members. There will be three courses available initially.

  • The ISAF offshore safety course, which is a 2-day course required for crews participating in offshore yacht races such as the Round Ireland and Fastnet Race, though any regular crews of ISORA boats would find great value in this course, which deals with heavy weather tactics, and sea survival.
  • The second course is a one-day marine orientated first aid course. A marine first aid course, (which covers cold water immersion and drowning) is a requirement for crew members of yachts participating in races such as the Round Ireland and Fastnet Race but is also a requirement for Irish Sailing dinghy sailing instructors as well as anyone hoping to sit the yachtmaster sailing exam.
  • The next course is the RYA VHF course, this is a one-day radio course. The course enables you to legally operate a vhf radio on a boat. It is an absolute must for anyone who sails regularly on a yacht or hopes to qualify as an Irish Sailing dinghy instructor. It is now also a requirement to charter a yacht in Europe. This course will finally give you the confidence to use the vhf radio, and to realise just what a useful tool it is to have onboard.
  • Just added; Yachtmaster Theory Course, The yachtmaster theory course is a more advanced navigation course and is really the navigation equivalent of the yachtmaster. This is a theory course in advanced navigational techniques and builds on the knowledge gained in the Dayskipper Theory course. The course is designed for powerboaters and yachtsmen wishing to make longer passages, possibly offshore and at night. While, the Dayskipper Theory is not a pre-requisite to attending this course, it is strongly recommended. Previous navigational experience is essential. 6 day course.
  • ICC navigation course (RYA Dayskipper Theory), The dayskipper theory which is really the ICC navigation course, is a 5 day theory course and offers all the basic navigation required to in yacht ownership or yacht charter. It is far more advanced than the small boat navigation course which is a two day course often run for the TY groups and needed for some powerboat courses.
The courses are run in the Club at discounted rates for club members in partnership with Irish Offshore Sailing. To book onto any of these courses or with any enquiries, just send an email to info@irishoffshoresailing.com quoting your RIYC membership number and Irish Offshore Sailing will process your booking.  (Your Membership number is the last four digits on your Club swipe card)
