Ireland’s Weather: Present and Future

We are privileged to have a talk by research meteorologist Dr Noel Fitzpatrick to discuss all things weather and climate. Noel will give an insight into how weather forecasts are generated and the steps taken to make more accurate predictions. Noel will then give an overview of some new developments in meteorology including Irelands’ involvement in an international weather model collaboration based in Iceland, and the launch of a new fleet of European weather satellites. We will also hear an update on climate predictions for Ireland. Noel will also give us some insight into his adventures as a storm chaser, and what causes severe weather like thunderstorms and tornadoes.
 
Speaker: Dr Noel Fitzpatrick - Research Meteorologist
Noel has been involved in weather and climate research for many years, carrying out projects in Ireland, the UK, Canada, Alaska and the Arctic. He gained a master’s in meteorology from the University of Reading, and a PhD from theUniversity of British Columbia, studying the impact of warming weather conditions on mountain glaciers. Noel currently leads the satellite meteorology unit at Met Éireannand is an Irish representative to EUMETSAT and Copernicus(European organisations for Earth Observation). Noel is also an active science communicator, podcast host, and is the founder of Big Skies Media, a science communication initiative.

About John Leahy
John is well known in the Club for teaching YM courses for many years and also for hosting Thursday evening Cruising Talks. He says 'We are pleased to have a special talk where Noel will speak to us about weather at sea and in particular recent severe weather patterns affecting NW Europe.
