2024 NEWS
FEVA SOUTHERN CHAMPIONSHIPS, CROSSHAVEN
Ruby Mulligan and Sophie Kelly, RIYC, 3rd place (Silver Fleet), Feva Southern Championships, Crosshaven, Cork, Sept 7th & 8th 2024.
Conditions were stubbornly light on the Saturday with only one race run with only half the boats finishing due to lack of wind. On Sunday it was blowing hard and gusting!
Ruby and Sophie had a dramatic gybe capsize at the mark! Several others capsized at the same time. Ruby ended up 5 or 6 metres adrift of the boat chasing the daggerboard and making her way back to the boat against the traffic!
Both arrived safely back to shore tired, far more experienced and delighted with themselves to have taken home some silverware!

We’ve had a great start to the 2024 sailing season with a number of RIYCADETS graduating as Instructors, two weeks of Easter Camps and re-commencement of our Schools Sailing Program for Castlepark, Nord Anglia and St. Andrews led by our Spring Coach Iseult Hogan.
Schools Sailing and Team Racing is an important addition to the Cadet calendar. We run sessions mid-week during the Summer and Autumn school term. A Taste of Sailing for novice sailors and Feva coaching to prepare sailors for the Schools Team Racing circuit which continues on into College years. These and other cadet initiatives have attracted over a dozen new ordinary members to the club who collectively have 35 plus children growing our Cadet Members cohort.
Feva Easterns were held in Greystones sailing club over the May bank holiday weekend supported by our new Feva Class Captain, Ailbhe O’Reilly. If you’d like Feva coaching at weekends please let us know. [email protected]
Summer Junior Section
We are delighted to welcome our new Senior Instructor, Abby Kinsella from Sutton Dinghy Club. Abby has been busy recruiting and planning the season ahead, which is now only a month or so away!
It’s all about friends! We want to encourage our Cadets to be independent sailors and be able to hang out with their friends - on and off the water - for life! So, we have removed the booking surcharge for friends of members for up to 3 x weeks of sailing at RIYC this summer.
Summer Booking form is LIVE on riyc.ie https://myclubaccount.co.uk/RIYC/SUSJ2024/SummerSailingCourse2024
Junior Regatta
📆 The RIYC Junior Regatta is Wednesday 24th July and we will host a boathouse boogie that night, so please save the date! 📅 We are looking for our 2024 Regatta sponsor, so if your company would like to support please contact Stephen Breen for our sponsorship proposal.
New Cadet and Family Room
We are absolutely delighted to share the #bestnewsever! Our dedicated and all year round Cadet and Family room is open to all members and their friends. It’s a contemporary vibe for the young and young at heart. We’d like to thank the club for both the recognition of our Cadets and this investment in their future as valued members of our club.
Inter-Club Friday Night Series - FNS
Starting Friday 10th May and running for six weeks. We couldn’t recommend this series enough to get kids back on the water and re-establish friendships with sailors on the waterfront. A great way to spend a Friday evening and it finishes off with a fabulous prize-giving and BBQ at NYC. Sign up quick! https://nyc.ie/calling-all-junior-sailors-across-the-waterfront-friday-night-junior-summer-racing-series-2024/
Deck and Dinghy Park
We’ve worked hard with the Boathouse team to clear the deck and dinghy park of all unused and broken boats. As part of the clean up we’ve been able to donate a Laser I, Laser II and 420 to Mullaghmore Sailing Club in Sligo. They are absolutely thrilled with the additions to their club fleet and we are happy to see boats that have served us so well enjoy a new lease of life in the West of Ireland. We are asking parents to kindly ensure that all dinghy trolleys have hard wheels as per club regulations. This helps us manage the deck in an efficient and safe manner.
Cadet Committee
So much happens behind the scenes to get our kids on the water each year. We owe a debt of gratitude to all our volunteers. Sincere thanks to our outgoing Committee members Ash Coffey, Sean Hooper and Jonnie Skerrit who have contributed so much over the last couple of years.
And I’m delighted to Welcome to Sarah Flannery, Jonnie O’Connor and Brian Mehigan to the Cadet Committee.
Thank you to Joe Conway our outgoing Rear Commodore Sailing who has been a great supporter of the many of the initiatives put forward by everyone!
Thank-you to our Parent Members
Thanks is also due to so many parents who support their kids in our famazing sport, particularly now with so much competition from other activities and Tik-Tok!
Our ask of our parents and guardians is to get involved as much as you can, volunteer, bring the kids, their friends (and their parents) to the club and continue to advocate for time on the water. Remember, It’s all about friends, so please do take advantage of the changes we have made to summer bookings!
As always, any ideas please reach out to any of the Cadet Committee [email protected] or WhatsApp https://chat.whatsapp.com/DdCinJ9Vla8LGZ6vYRsfeq

Melges 15 Winter Series in Cascais, by Tom Flannery
The Cascais winter series event is definitely one that needs to be done. It was my first time in Cascais and it was an amazing place to sail. I went over with my crew Lily Dwyer from the George. It was a very breezy event. We saw boat speeds up to 17 knots. The Melges 15 is an amazing boat for both young and old people as it has speeds that you would see in a skiff but has the stability and ease of sailing that you would find in an average dinghy such as a feva. The class here in Dublin Bay is growing hugely and I’d strongly recommend getting out for a blast.
RIYCADETS EASTER CAMP
Calling all Cadets! Easter sailing - Invite your friends! We’re going to mix it up. 1720’s, Fevas, Teras and Easter themed fun, egg hunts, quizzes and paddle board races! Two courses over 4 days 25-28th March and 2nd - 5th April, €180 including boat charter. Book here
NEW FEVA CLASS CAPTAIN
Hi all, let me introduce myself as the new RIYC Feva class captain.
I would really love to focus on encouraging more sailors to get involved in Feva racing this year. My goal is to make Feva sailing and racing as enjoyable and accessible as possible, for all sailors, of any level. Especially those who are just moving into the Feva class or who want to get more involved in racing as a whole.
I would be grateful for any feedback from sailors or parents on expectations or suggestions for the coming year. The goal of this is to understand how the Feva class in the RIYC can be improved and give young sailors the opportunity to really enjoy the the class and the sport in general.
I look forward to talking with you all soon and hope to see you on the water and at the club.
With very best regards,
Ailbhe O’Reilly

Cadets Annual Dinner and Awards dazzles from "Door to Dining Room"
The Club Dining Room was buzzing last weekend with Cadets, Instructors and Cadet Commitee Members for the Annual Cadet Dinner and Awards.
Dozens of Parents joined for supper and drinks in the Drawing Room and helped pump up the volume for an energetic prize-giving.
The Cadets received a wonderful welcome from Rear Commodore Sailing, Joe Conway and our outgoing Senior Instructor Hannah Leonard.
"We are all delighted to celebrate an uninterrupted year on the water. Thanks to Hannah and her team for instilling the values of sailing; both adventure and performance on and off the water" said Stephen Breen, our Junior Organiser.
The prize-giving recognised Cadets who won the club silverware and those who participated at local and regional events. Importantly, there were prizes for those who went the extra mile to nurture and encourage a fun and inclusive environment.

The Tyrrell order of Merit
Thank you to Michael and Therese Tyrrell for joining us and presenting the Tyrrell Perpetual Trophy awarded to sailors who participate in the most events over the season. Equal points go to sailors no matter where they finish, so it's not just about winning! Cadets participating in lots of local events (Fri night/Sept series) can beat a top racing sailor that is competing in national/international events.
Cadet of the year - Geneva Roque : First year sailing in a few years and after a few weeks, she began to really enjoy it and improved hugely throughout the summer.
Best Cadet swimmer and pier jumper - Adam Swan : Enjoys more than most jumping off the pontoon and usually the last out of the water!
Bravest Cadet Sailor - David Neligan : Sailing with Hamish and Maurice in strong winds, helping to right the Feva when we capsized and taking over helm during big waves. (loves jumping in the water also)
Best Total Wipeout (Craziest capsize) - Alex Swan : Over the summer, Alex has proven that capsizing - and recovery - is his thing.
Most improved Cadet - Luke Dunphy : moved from an Oppie to a Tera, and thrived in the wind conditions he was sent out in, confident in the boat on his own.
Cadet Volunteer of the year - Tom Flannery : Regularly volunteered to help the younger sailors when they are struggling in stronger wind conditions.
Instructor of the Year
Congratulations to Siofra Mooney who won the inaugural Instructor of the Year Award for her passion, commitment and warmth shown to all our Cadets.

Update 3rd March, 2022
RIYC Cadets take on the Mid-Term Weather Gods and...Win!
Our first ever February schools mid-term sailing camp sold out almost immediately.
Though the weather gods conspired against us, they were unable to dampen the spirits of our sailors. Our 20 sailors were a mix of all ages and experience and with some new sailors joining the crew. Instructors Hannah, Max, Hugo and Leonie ran shore-based activities for the three afternoons and the feeling was everyone had a great time, particularly buzzing around in the RIBs and tying instructors up in newly learnt knots!
Thanks to Drazen for supplying the Hot Chocolate and to Mark McGibney and the Boathouse team for getting the boats ready so early in the season.
REMINDER - Cadet Weekend Sailing starts this weekend, Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th March. Emphasis will be fun on the water and refreshing what we learnt last summer. Our Instructors will be able to rate our sailors towards their Irish sailing levels as we progress through the spring and into summer.
Sailors should be in their sailing gear and ready to sail at 2pm each day and we’ll finish at 5pm.
You can book the first seven weeks now and that gets you sailing until Easter. We’ll shortly open up another seven weeks to Summer. Please send any queries or feedback to [email protected]

NEW CADET SAILING COMMITTEE FOR 2022
Overview by Stephen Breen
I'm delighted the Sailing Committee asked me to take on the role of ‘Junior Organiser’ at RIYC. Firstly, massive thanks to Siobhan Mooney, Sean O’Regan, Malcolm Moir and Gus Kelly for their tireless contribution to Junior Sailing over many, many years.
Our focus for 2022 is to deliver on the valuable feedback from the Junior & Parent Member Survey 2021 and to build programs and activities that reflect the diversity of our Cadet Members aged between 8 and 29yrs. To start with, we have ‘rebranded’ from Junior Sailing Committee to;
RIYC Cadets
Sailing & Social Committee
In the 2021 survey, parents and junior members alike asked for a broader range of both on and off water activities throughout the year, increased opportunities for our Instructors and that our Cadet Members should have a greater say in curating activities at the Club.
To deliver on Members feedback, we are organising into teams that will focus on three different age groups, (8-16yrs | 16-21yrs | 21-29yrs) each, of course, with their own different needs and wants. Finally, we will deliver on Cadet Sailing
and Social activities throughout the year, not just the summer months. We call this;
RIYC Cadet Sailing 365
We’re delighted to welcome three RIYC Instructors and Cadet Members -
Laura Coleman, Hannah Leonard and
Siofra Mooney - to the RIYC Cadets Sailing & Social Committee. In addition, Hannah has recently taken on the role of RIYC Senior Instructor, you can contact her at
[email protected]
This is the first time we’ve had our Senior Instructor on a Club Committee and additionally, I’m excited to welcome
Ais Coffey,
Jonny Skerritt and
Richard Kidney to the team and grateful that
Caoimhe Lowe is in her second year. We’ve reduced the average age of the Cadet Committee from 48yrs to 34yrs! The aim is to be under 30yrs by this time next year!
So, we’re off to an exciting start thanks to the foundational work of the previous Junior Committee, Flag Officers, Sailing Manager and Club Staff. Thank you!
RIYC Invests in largest fleet of RS Teras in Ireland
The Club's commitment to Cadet sailing is demonstrated by the purchase of six brand new Teras bringing the total number to twelve now available for charter. The Tera is an exciting “single hander'' perfect to learn, race and have fun - for all sailing levels. With the largest fleet in Ireland, there is an opportunity to grow the Tera fleet in Dun Laoghaire and beyond and consider a National Championships. The Tera’s are a great addition to our fleet of eleven Fevas, four optimists, four 1720’s - don't forget we have SUPs for rent!
RS Feva Irish National Championships 2022 - In case you missed it, RIYC will host the Feva Nationals from July 1st to 3rd - NOR soon!
RIYC Cadets nominated for Irish Sailing Youth Sailor of The Year! Congratulations to our very own Tim Norwood and Nathan van Steenberge for their nomination. A great testament to their skill, passion and an inspiration to Cadet sailors of all ages.

Cadet Winter Weekend Sailing - In October and November last year, we ran weekend courses for Cadets and now, with Hannah on-board, this will continue March through to end May when summer courses commence. We’ll re-start again in September through to the end of November.
University and Intervarsity Sailing - The Club continues to support University Sailing by hosting UCD Fireflies over the Winter and we are looking at ways to ramp up our support to our Cadet members in Third level Education. Trinity and UCD are both hosting Alumni Team Racing and Dinner events in February, so sign up on Instagram.
Spring Calendar - SAVE THE DATES - booking forms to follow
- February Mid-term break - The first mid-term camp for cadets took place from 21st to 23rd February. The camp was busy with 20 attendees. The weather unfortunately meant sailing was not possible so there were shore-based activities for the three afternoons. Everyone had a great time.
- Weekend Adventure Sailing - 12-3pm every Saturday and Sunday. We’ll mix it up with 1720’s, Fevas and our new Teras! - Starting Saturday 5th March.
- Schools Easter Holiday Adventure Sailing - Spring fun and adventure on-and-off the water - we’ll have all our charter boats ready to go. Exact details and dates to be confirmed - Watch this space!
