RIYC's Fiachra Geraghty McDonnell prepares for the Senior World Championships taking place next week in Dún Laoghaire, hosted out of the Royal St. George Yacht Club and National Yacht Club.
"I’m incredibly excited to finish the season with my first Senior World Championships in my hometown.
It has already been a hugely rewarding season, with plenty of valuable experience gained competing on the senior circuit. A highlight was finishing second at the Arenal Regatta, while I was also delighted to successfully defend my national title. The national championships came after a challenging couple of weeks in hospital due to an illness, which unfortunately set back my training, so I’m particularly pleased to be back to full fitness and training hard.
I’m now looking forward to competing at the highest level once again, and there is no better place to do it than at home in Dún Laoghaire. Racing against the best sailors in the world will be a fantastic opportunity to test myself and continue building experience at senior level.
After the Worlds, the focus will turn to further high-performance training, with a potential trip Down Under to
Australia on the cards to work on some key areas of technique. All of this preparation will build towards the World Sailing Championships in Brazil in January. I’m hoping to compete there and represent Ireland, with this being an opportunity to qualify Ireland for the LA 2028 Olympic Games, adding even greater significance to the event.
As always, I’m incredibly grateful to my family and to everyone who supports me and helps get me to the start line with the best possible chance of performing. I’m particularly proud to be a member of the Royal Irish Yacht Club and honoured to represent the Club on the international stage.
The support I’ve received from RIYC has played an important part in my progress, and I’m very grateful to everyone in the Club who continues to get behind me. I’m looking forward to the weeks ahead and hopefully making the Club proud as I take on some of the biggest challenges of my sailing career so far."
