RIYC SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE

01/07/2019

The RIYC is championing a number of initiatives as part of its environmental sustainability drive including eliminating the use of single-use plastics in the Club.

WATER BOTTLES

Key measures include the removal of single use water bottles i.e. the Club will no longer sell water in plastic bottles. To facilitate and encourage Members participation, the Club has installed filtered water drinking taps on the deck where members can fill their own reusable bottles.
A reusable RIYC crested bottle is also available to purchase in the club, from the Catering Office or Bar.
The bottle costs €10 to buy and will supply obvious savings in terms of reduced water purchases and in discarded plastic.

In a move towards compostable rather than general waste,  the Club now uses only compostable sandwich cases and straws and we have replaced the paper cups in the Bar with a compostable substitute.

BINS

In line with the move away from general waste there will be labeled bins on the Terrace and Deck for post-race rubbish which you are encouraged to use, when bringing rubbish ashore make sure to separate recyclable and general waste into the correct bin. Similarly, the kitchen has introduced compostable refuse bags replacing regular plastic bags.

The RIYC will continue, over the coming months, to introduce small changes and we ask you to support this important initiative which we hope will make a difference to our environment.

Members suggestions are welcome and should be sent to the Catering Office.
