Munster 2017 Optimist Championships

Six Optimist sailors, Finn Cleary, Christian Ennis, Matty Keane, Rory McMullan, Anna O’Connor and Ray O’Shea went to the Munster Championships in Kinsale Yacht Club for the weekend 13 / 14th May, and braved very strong, difficult and rough conditions, while anxious parents looked on nervously from the Old Head, but thankfully all returned safely.  Five races were completed over the two days, Finn Cleary was 9th in the Senior Silver fleet, Anna O’Connor was 13th in the Junior Gold fleet, Christian Ennis 13th in Junior Silver fleet, and Matty Keane 16th in Junior Silver fleet.

Ulster 2017 Optimist Championships

Six Optimist sailors from the Club went to the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club in Hollywood for the weekend of 10th / 11th June to compete in the Ulster 2017 Optimist Championships.  It turned out to be an event with strong winds on the Saturday gusting to 20 knots, but three races were completed, enough for the Championship to run.  All were made to feel very welcome, and able to enjoy the views across Belfast Lough from the friendly clubhouse.

The day ended with the RIYC contingent all completing their races and returning good results.
In the Senior Fleet Tim Norwood was third in the Gold fleet, while Finn Cleary was fifth in the Silver Fleet.  In the Junior Fleet Anna O'Connor was 11th in the Gold Fleet, while Christian Ennis was 8th in the Silver fleet with Rory McMullan 16th while Kate McMullan was competing in the Regatta fleet.
Following a good night’s sleep, all turned up early rigged and ready to race on Sunday, but with the wind getting stronger by the hour, reaching 29 knots by 11.30 the decision was taken to abandon all racing.  With coaches present Anna O'Connor, and Tim Norwood took the opportunity to go sailing and enjoy a brief coaching session on the water, returning full of smiles.
This meant the results from the Saturday racing stood, with Rory O'Sullivan from RCYC taking first place, Moss Simington from RSGYC taking second and Tim Norwood taking third place in Gold, and Finn Cleary taking fifth place in Silver.
The next Optimist event is the Connacht Championships on the 14th / 15th July in the Waterford Harbour Sailing Club, Dunmore East, to be followed by the National Championships which, as I am sure all are aware, will be taking place in RIYC, our own Club from 17th to 20th August, which promises to be wonderful occasion.

Incidentally, Anna O’Connor will be going to the British Nationals as a member of the Irish U12 squad, from 29th July to 4th August which are being held in Weymouth, and I am sure all will join us in wishing her well.
